From what i've read the relationship between Carl and Negan in the comics is very messed up. This episode showed the first glimpses of that relationship. Carl hates Negan but Negan is impressed with Carl and thinks he's kind of awesome.
Is Negan grooming Carl to try and get him to join the Saviours? What is Rick going to make of this meeting? What will he do when finds out Carl killed a few of The Saviours? Only time will tell.
