Game of Cones at Fat Hippo Underground | Newcastle

*Ad - complimentary meal

The epic final season of Game of Thrones is underway and I'm loving it as much now as I did when I first started watching. I honestly think Game of Thrones is THE best TV there has ever been. The sheer scale of the show is like nothing else, the story and intrigue keep you guessing and the acting from everyone involved is really stellar. Tyrion is my favourite followed by Arya and I also like Bronn (I still find it hard to believe he is Jerome from Robson and Jerome) but the whole cast are amazing.

To celebrate the final series, Fat Hippo have launched a very special special 'Game of Cones'. When they asked me and Mrs. Cool along to try it out I was aal owa it. Having a day off work meant me and Mrs. Cool could have one of our date days while the kids were at school. I love Fat Hippo and have said a few times that they do the best Burgers in Newcastle I like to mix it up and try a different burger each time (PB&J is bae though) so I like to try their specials from the Burger Lab.

Going down the stairs like decending into the Crypts of Winterfell we were shown to our seats and our drinks order taken, this was lunch time so no wine like Cersei or Ale like The Hound and it was strictly San Pellegrino for us. We decided to start by sharing the Trash Browns and Oh! My Days are they good. Deep fried tater tots topped with cheese sauce, crispy fried onions and bacon bits. It's pretty big for a starter so was a great portion for us to share. Apologies for the quality of the photos but the restaurant is Dark and Full of Terrors.
Onto the Main Event, The Game of Cones. This is Sweet Chilli Chicken Nuggets in a Waffle Cone with Gooey American Cheese, Smoked Bacon Bits and Garlic and Herb Sauce. The chicken is great and the sweet chilli coating was incredible, What I really loved though was the herby flavour of the Mayo but the best bit was the little treat at the bottom of the cone where gooey cheese sauce pooled like a little dip for my fries. This is a deceptively big meal and by the end I was stuffed but it is another triumph from the Burger Lab, you can try the Game of Cones at all Fat Hippo venues until 20th May. There's also a Halloumi option available for veggies.

I had tried to talk to Mrs. Cool all morning about our theories about what will happen in the Game of Thrones Finale but she kept shushing me and telling me to to save the GoT chat for lunch and it sounded like everyone else had the same idea as there were several conversations going on at other tables about the goings on in Westeros. Personally I can't decide and my theories change all the time but I'm going to enjoy finding out and there are only a few weeks left until the climax.

Mrs Cool's Thoughts........

It took me a while to get into Game of Thrones. I remember Steve watching it from the start and I just thought it was some kind of violent porno! It was after the Red Wedding episode and watching Steve's reaction that I thought I could maybe get into it so Steve agreed to re-watch the whole thing from the start and I was hooked!

I love the women in Game of Thrones but for me, Cersei will always be my favourite (although Arya is a close second). I just love how ruthless she is and that she'll stop at absolutely nothing to get what she wants. That meme of Cersei drinking wine is one of my all time faves.
We have been GRIPPED by the final season of Game of Thrones and I honestly think it's the best season yet. I hate that Steve works Mondays though and the new episode taunts my on our Sky Box. We have a pact that we can't watch it without each other now. I also think that this final season is actually best watched in the dark plus I don't think I'd be emotionally ready to watch it during the day so maybe it has worked out for the best that we're forced to watch it later.....

Anyway, I have always loved Fat Hippo and love that their Burger Lab keeps things fresh, They've come up with some fantastic limited edition burgers over the years and 'Game of Cones' to celebrate the finale of Game of Thrones is some kind of stroke of genius. I nearly always order the same when I visit Fat Hippo (The American hold the gherkins). I absolutely love this burger and honestly never have any reason to order anything else. Well that was until Game of Cones tempted me of course.

We decided to turn our Game of Cones lunch into a real event. We saved any GoT chat for lunch and spent the whole time chatting about our favourite scenes, characters and theories for who will end up on the Iron Throne. A follower mentioned to me they thought it would be Sansa and Tyrion and this is who I'm going with. It's not *too* obvious and kind of makes sense. It turns out, the rest of Newcastle had the same idea as us and the restaurant was buzzing with groups of friends chatting about the show. The only thing that could have improved our lunch is if they'd been playing the epic Game of Thrones soundtrack in the background.

Onto the food - I'd never order a chicken burger normally but once sampled one of the kids' chicken strips at Fat Hippo Durham and was really impressed. The chicken was so tender and beautifully cooked. It's definitely not all about the beef. The Game of Cones really reminded me of eating a chicken ice cream (honestly not as gross as it sounds). The chicken was nice and herby and the sweetness of the cone worked really well with the saltiness of the garlic dressing, cheese sauce and bacon. Steve ate his like an actual ice cream but it was too much for me and I think a knife and fork is a lot easier. The dish is served with fries and I'd recommend saving some for the end as the bottom of the cone is filled with gooey cheese which is perfect for dipping. The portion is deceptively huge and as lovely as they were, I really regretted ordering trash browns to share as I couldn't finish my main. If you're going for this burger, I'd definitely recommend skipping the starters.
Newcastle was buzzing today and I loved having a little lunch date in my favourite city with Steve chatting about one of our favourite TV shows over a cracking dish. If you're a Game of Thrones fan, I can highly recommend organising your own Game of Cones date at Fat Hippo before the season finale on 20 May.

  1. Someone told me such a detailed theory yesterday that I'm now convinced he knows something! I've told him that if any of it ends up being true I shall be after him!
