Captain Marvel Review

Captain Marvel at Cineworld Screen X Review

Captain Marvel is the latest blockbuster in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, released on International Women's Day and what a woman Captain Marvel is. Captain Marvel stars Brie Larson as Vers/Carol Danvers/Captain Marvel, Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury, Ben Mendlesohn as Talos, Jude Law as Yon-Rogg and Annette Benning as Dr. Wendy Lawson.

Vers is a member of the Kree Starforce fighting against The Skrulls - a race of shapeshifting aliens who have been at war with the Kree for centuries. Vers is no normal Kree though, she has no memory prior the last 6 years and under the command of Yon-Rogg she is learning to control the powers she has that could make her one of the most powerful heroes in the Universe.

After a mission to rescue a Kree spy goes wrong, Vers ends up on Earth tracking a cell of Skrull Terrorists who have come to Earth to find Dr. Wendy Lawson, a scientist who may have developed a Light-Speed Engine and who may have something to do with Vers' lost past. If the Skrull get their hands on the engine, they would be able to attack the Kree anywhere in the galaxy. After crashing through the roof of a Blockbuster Video Store (this is set in 1995 so there were plenty of them around then), Vers catches the attention of Nick Fury, an agent of SHIELD. Vers and Fury team up to find Dr. Lawson, discover the secrets of Vers' past and get rid of the Skrull from Earth.

Captain Marvel feels both familiar and fresh, the MCU has been going for over 10 years and returning characters like Nick Fury and Agent Coulson have that connection to the story we have been following for a decade but with them interacting with new characters makes this a brand new story. I really liked Brie Larson as her portrayal of Captain Marvel made her both an accomplished warrior while also being vulnerable in not knowing who she is or where she is from. I'm a big fan of both Jude Law and Ben Medlesohn and they play their parts with all the gusto needed in a superhero film.

What is essentially a prequel to all other films in the MCU (except for Captain America: The First Avenger), Captain Marvel is set in 1995 and is full of 90's pop culture references from perusing the VHS on offer in the Video Store to the Nine Inch Nails T-Shirt Vers wears when she is trying to blend in with the locals. I really loved the Soundtrack too, 90's grunge and R&B with strong emphasis on female vocals, bands like No Doubt, Elastica and Salt n Pepper taking me right back to my teenage years.

The VFX are really spectacular (as you would expect) with space battles and a jet dog-fight through the mountains being particularly impressive. But it was the process of de-aging Nick Fury and Agent Coulson that was really mind-blowing, there have been a few films using this process and the effects have been steadily getting better and here you cannot tell that any VFX have even been used and you forget that Samual L Jackson is actually 70 years old.

There is a lot going on in Captain Marvel but the film never feels rushed or overcrowded. There are plenty plot twists to keep you guessing as to what is going to happen. There is a lot of heart here too with Captain Marvel and Nick Fury becoming friends throughout the film and a special mention needs to be said about Goose the Cat who really does steal the show.

We went to see Captain Marvel at Screen X at Cineworld which is something new for me. The Screen is stretched across 270ยบ covering three walls and is a really immersive way of watching a film. At certain points you feel like you're actually flying around with Captain Marvel. While 3D makes it feel like the action is coming right out of the screen, Screen X make it feel like you're actually part of the action.

Avengers:  Endgame

Avengers: Endgame is a movie fans have waiting over 10 years for (yes, that's how long it has been since Iron Man was released). We only have one short month to wait as the movie goes on general release on 25 April 2019. We left the Avengers with Infinity War last year - the universe was in tatters. Will our favourite heroes be able to work together and restore order? You'll have to pop back at the end of April to find out.

Marvel Universe LIVE!

Marvel Universe LIVE! is heading to Newcastle's Utilita Arena for the first time this year. From 21-24 November 2019, audiences will witness cutting-edge special effects, pyrotechnics, and impressive 3D video projection in this all-new thrilling adventure.

Expect Doctor Strange, the Guardians of the Galaxy, Iron Man, Black Panther, Hulk, Black Widow, Green Goblin, Spider-Man, the Avengers, Loki and more.

We're promised aerial stunts, video projection and lots of thrills and after seeing a Marvel movie in Screen X and feeling as if we were actually in the movie, I can't wait to see these guys in person. As a family, we can't wait to see all of our favourite Marvel heroes (and villains) in real life.

Marvel Universe LIVE! tickets are now available and if your family enjoy the film as much as we did, tickets will make a wonderful Easter gift. You can find out more about the show and buy tickets online here.

What is going to be your Marvel highlight of 2019? It's going to be difficult for me to pick just one!

Well, that's all for now.

  1. there's so many marvel films that i often lose the plot (and definitely haven't seen them all!) but like the idea this is a film where you don't need to know the back story. Great that there is a female in the starring role too! We enjoyed the 4D screen at the gate a while back so will look forward to catching a movie on screen x soon!

    1. Is 4D when you have wind and water in your face? I think I would find that distracting.

  2. We saw it at the weekend and both loved it - I do wish there had been slightly more 90s tunes in the film though, I was expecting it to be more packed with great songs like Guardians! Loved the walk down memory lane ... it really took me back!

    1. Ah, I really liked the soundtrack. There could’ve been more variety though like guardians
